Fall: the season of change and endings. The trees that once thrived during spring and summer are now facing months of slumber. The warm sunshine hides behind grey clouds, heavy raindrops and bitter winds. But despite this melancholy picture, Fall is also the season of vibrant colours: orange-red leaves scattered over pavements, pumpkins decorating windowsills and doorways, golden-brown pies cooling on the counters, filling the kitchen with the most appetising smells, colourful mugs of warm tea and chunky cardigans. Fall is such an inspiring season and with each year I’ve come to associate many things with it, including books, music and obviously food!
There are books that I will forever associate with Fall, maybe because I’ve read them during this season or they are simply the perfect companions for a cosy night in while it’s pouring rain outside. I hope by some miracle I manage to reread some of them this month:
Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Autumn by Ali Smith
Vicious by V.E Schwab
The Diviners by Libba Bray
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
My favourite place to read during Fall is at my favourite coffeeshop. I absolutely love the atmosphere in coffeeshops when it’s pouring rain outside while you’re basking in the warm coffee aroma indoors. I drink tea and coffee all year round but the colder weather makes me appreciate them even more. My all-time favourites are: hazelnut cappuccino, vanilla latte, peppermint tea and English Breakfast tea. I’ve never had Pumpkin Spiced Latte before but I definitely need to try it this year.
As the weather gets crisper my love for cooking/baking is rekindled once again, probably because having my face smack dab in front of the oven is much more bearable when I’m not drowning in my own sweat! Pumpkins definitely dominate the kitchen during this season: pumpkin soup, pumpkin cake, pumpkin pies…you name it! I’ve never cooked them myself but I definitely love my mum’s recipes. However I’d like to dabble in some Fall-themed cooking myself this month and attempt to bake some of my favourite treats, maybe an apple crumble or pumpkin bread. They taste absolutely perfect with a cup of tea.
One thing I look forward to most during Fall is getting home after work, make a cup of tea, light my favourite scented candle and read for hours on end swaddled in a thick fluffy blanket. I love listening to music while reading, especially Autumn playlists and ambient music. If I’m in the mood I also watch some of my favourite films that are perfect for this time of year: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Dark Shadows, Sleepy Hollow, Harry Potter, and a recent favourite: Stranger Things. Gosh I love this series so much!! This year I’d like to add to the list so these coming weeks I’m looking forward to watch Dead Poet’s Society, Halloweentown and Coraline.
There’s nothing better than having your room smelling of pumpkins and cinnamon. I absolutely love my pumpkin spice scented candle by P.F. Candle Co. I also bought two themed candles recently from Gunn Dean Candle Co: The Night Circus which smells of caramel and popcorn, and The Witch’s Brew which is a combination of basil, pumpkin and vanilla. They truly smell divine and I cannot wait to have my room smell of my all-time favourite book!
I love compiling playlists, especially seasonal ones. I’ve found this to be a great way to discover new music and artists and it’s also therapeutic for me as well. Misty Mornings is my recent Autumn-themed playlist, which you can listen to on Spotify:
