Quotes from Middle Earth

While reading the Lord of the Rings series this year, I managed to accumulate quite a number of quotes from the books that have truly resonated with me. Some of them are extremely hilarious, while others are a reminder of the hardships of life and why we need to keep on walking. I think my favourite from the trilogy will always be The Fellowship of the Ring because it’s where Frodo’s journey starts. At the same time though, we are reminded that Frodo’s story is interconnected with other stories and  what we are reading is actually a very long epilogue. These are a few quotes of many and I hope they inspire you to read the books or watch the films (believe me, it’s definitely worth watching if only just to see Viggo aka Aragorn being an absolute badass!)

“I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”

*

“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”

*

“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”

*

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

*

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement”.

*

“Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back and home to bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!”

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

*

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair”.

*

“It’s the job that’s never started as takes the longest to finish”.

*

“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.”

“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”

*

“What do you fear, lady?” [Aragorn] asked.
“A cage,” [Éowyn] said. “To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.”

*

“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.”

*

“I am glad you are with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam”.

*

“I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil”.

  1. My family and I often use “Po-ta-to, mash-em, boil-em, stick-em in a stew!”, and also “I think I found the bottom!” quotes from Sam and from Frodo.
