“I apologize for anything I might have done. I was not myself.”

“I apologize for shooting you in the leg. I was myself entirely.”

-VE Schwab || A Darker Shade of Magic

“A lifetime isn’t enough to know how a person will behave.”

-Jessie Burton || The Miniaturist

“Someone needs to tell those tales. When the battles are fought and won and lost, when the pirates find their treasures and the dragons eat their foes for breakfast with a nice cup of Lapsang souchong, someone needs to tell their bits of overlapping narrative. There’s magic in that. It’s in the listener, and for each and every ear it will be different, and it will affect them in ways they can never predict. From the mundane to the profound. You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift. Your sister may be able to see the future, but you yourself can shape it, boy. Do not forget that… there are many kinds of magic, after all.”

-Erin Morgenstern || The Night Circus

“I got to thinking that poems were like people. Some people you got right off the bat. Some people you just didn’t get-and never would get.”

-Benjamin Alire Sáenz || Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe

“If you take a book with you on a journey,” Mo had said when he put the first one in her box, “an odd thing happens: The book begins collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open that book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into your mind with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place, what it smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it… yes, books are like flypaper—memories cling to the printed page better than anything else.”

-Cornelia Funke || Inkheart

“The first of many autumn rains smelled smoky, like a doused campsite fire, as if the ground itself had been aflame during those hot summer months. It smelled like burnt piles of collected leaves, the cough of a newly revived chimney, roasted chestnuts, the scent of a man’s hands after hours spent in a wood shop.”

-Leslye Walton || The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender

“Time passes. That’s the rule. No matter what happens, no matter how much it might feel like everything in your life has been frozen around one particular moment, time marches on.”

-Cynthia Hand || The Last Time We Say Goodbye

I. Favourite Quotes

Your favourite book quotes stay with you forever. They can be simple words of advice or a perfectly thought out knee-slapper. Words of inspiration or unvarnished revelations about the difficulties of life. Words that remind you of the most beautiful and sentimental moments in the book that you want to cherish forever. They paint a perfect picture in our minds and evoke innumerable memories and emotions. And what I find even more beautiful is the fact that each quote holds a different meaning for every person.

I love writing down my favourite quotes in a notebook and later on leaf through it just so I could experience again the magic of these words and see whether they still hold the same meaning as before. This is what eventually inspired me to write this post. I want to share with you some of my favourite quotes from the many books that I’ve read so far and I hope they can inspire you, help you through life and maybe encourage you to read the book! This will be the first post out of many and I truly hope you will enjoy it! x

“In any case, fire burns; that’s its nature, and you can’t expect to change that. You can use it to cook your meat or to burn down your neighbor’s house. And is the fire you use for cooking any different from the one you use for burning? And does that mean you should eat your supper raw?”

Maddy shook her head, still puzzled. “So what you’re saying is . . . I shouldn’t play with fire,” she said at last.

Of course you should,” said One-Eye gently. “But don’t be surprised if the fire plays back.”

-Joanne Harris || Runemarks

“When you drop a glass or a plate to the ground it makes a loud crashing sound. When a window shatters a table leg breaks or when a picture falls off the wall it makes a noise. But as for your heart, when that breaks it’s completely silent… and you almost wish there was a noise to distract you from the pain.”

Cecelia Ahern || If You Could See Me Now

“I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still”.

V.E. Schwab || A Darker Shade of Magic

“i want to apologize to all the women i have called beautiful

before i’ve called them intelligent or brave

i am sorry i made it sound as though

something as simple as what you’re born with

is all you have to be proud of

when you have broken mountains with your wit

from now on i will say things like

you are resilient, or you are extraordinary

not because i don’t think you’re beautiful

but because i need you to know

you are more than that”

Rupi Kaur || Milk & Honey

“The tongue is the most remarkable. For we use it both to taste out sweet wine and bitter poison, thus also do we utter words both sweet and sour with the same tongue.”

Neil Gaiman || The Graveyard Book

“I am haunted by humans.”

Markus Zusak || The Book Thief

“A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended.”

― Ian McEwan || Atonement

“Sometimes in life, we need a few bad days in order to keep the good ones in perspective.”

― Colleen Hoover || Maybe Someday
